Buckhead, Georgia, is a small community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia. According to the US Census Bureau, Buckhead officially is 0.8 square miles with a population of 205 (2000), but locals often refer to neighboring areas as Buckhead as well. The Buckhead Guidebook lists the area as 28 square miles, and this site covers the larger Buckhead area. It boasts beautiful homes and a high standard of living, along with an array of shops and galleries to satisfy both the shopper and aesthetic elements in you.
Buckhead’s namesake is reputedly from the head of a buck mounted Henry Irby’s general store and tavern back in 1837. Although there were attempts to rename the area, the name stuck, and to this day, this posh area of Atlanta still bears the name Buckhead.
The most famous of the Buckhead’s shopping is Lenox Square Mall, which has expanded greatly since its opening in 1959. Lenox offers many flagship locations and large shops of nationally-known designer stores and chains, a food court, and hours of shopping fun amongst the 240 stores and restaurants. It is across the street from the ritzy Phipps Plaza Mall.
The area is also home to many parks, which are incorporated amongst the various shopping districts. Beautiful old trees are prevalent in this neighborhood, and the manner in which the buildings are nestled amongst them provides a cozy, home-like feel.
The historic Swan House is a well-known landmark, and is the subject of several books – even a cookbook. Be sure to visit this time-capsule of a home, and be transported back to the easy-going days of a wealthy family in the 1930s.
